Unemployed Irish artist Frank Buckley has found the perfect way to comment on the housing bust …
“It’s a reflection of the whole madness that gripped us,” Buckley said of what he calls his “billion-euro home.”
“People were pouring billions into buildings now worth nothing,” he said. “I wanted to create something from nothing.”
The house is made from decommissioned euros given to Buckley by the Central Bank of Ireland. These he fashioned into bricks of 6″x 2″, with each brick containing 40 to 50 thousand shredded euros.
He then used the bricks to build a three-bed house in an abandoned office building, and has moved in there.
One advantage of the notes, he says (and this would surely draw eulogies from Kevin McCloud) is that he can sleep in the house without a blanket: “Whatever you say about the euro, it’s a great insulator,” he says.
Buckley was a victim of the irish housing crash, Despite having no steady income, he was able to purchase a 365,000 euro ($450,000) house on the outskirts of Dublin on a 100% mortgage.
